A Marketing Lesson
by Scott - posted Monday, October 29th, 2007
The charade is up. In the famous words of Roberto Duran, “No Mas”.
I’m referring to Tim Duncan’s inability to sustain a successful sneaker line. It’s not his fault, it’s not adidas’ fault. I’ve bought the last three pairs, and they are all good sneakers. If you like adidas, if you like black and white, if you like comfortable, then these are the shoes for you. Apparently though, that “you” isn’t too many people.
Let’s just give it up. This guy is a superstar. He’s one of the best players in the game today and in the history of the sport. I don’t think he needs a sneaker line to cement his place in history. It seems as if every year, they try some sort of half-baked plan to get him back on some sort of map, and then, within a few weeks, his shoes are not only not being sold on the adidas website. Then, before you know it, you can only buy the shoes in off colors (like red and blue, which I still can’t figure out why they’re made for any one’s consumption at any point, in the first place) or in off sizes.
No one really deserves a shoe line on the Spurs. I’ve talked about this at length already this year. They’re a great team, but they’re not an exciting team. So what? You want to give Frankie Elson a shoe deal? Maybe PONY or New Balance will ante up. Outside of that, I doubt it.
The only guy I would even nominate is Tony Parker. But, then again, let’s be fair about him too. As good as he is, and as popular as his wife is, he still plays with the Spurs, he still is a foreign born player, and he still isn’t a mainstream icon.
So, basically, my point is, just give the shoes to someone else. Let Gilbert Arenas collect all of the shoe titles he likes (which we all know is too many to count), and let the Spurs collect the hardware that really matters.
